About this Event
“Somewhere in the eastern part of Europe, where it gets bitterly cold in winter, there is a dark forest. If you are ever brave, foolish or ignorant enough to go wandering through that forest, there is a good chance that you might come across a peculiar house….”
Why do people love ghost stories? What can Dracula, Bigfoot and Slender Man teach us about storytelling? In this workshop, we will think about how folklore and urban legends teach us about effective stories, and will have a go at writing our own.
Students will:
- Consider the role of stories in our world and how different cultures and context influence storytelling.
- Practice the key rule of ‘show not tell’ and how to evoke atmosphere and engage audiences in their writing.
- Understand the various language and structural devices used in effective storytelling, and how to utilise them in their own work.
Students will compose their own complete imaginative piece in the course of the workshop and will receive feedback and guidance both on their reading comprehension and their creative writing skills.
