Looking Beyond - outstanding photos from Washington DC to the Venetian Lagoon taken by Italian COSMO-SkyMed satellites and curated by Maggia
About this Event

Starting on the occasion of Italian National Space Day, which commemorates the launch of the first Italian satellite into space  ("San Marco 1”) that took place on December 15, 1964, the Italian Cultural Institute of Washington, in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy, presents the exhibition “Looking Beyond” - a series of photographic images, from Washington DC to the Venetian Lagoon, captured by Italian satellites as a testimony of Italian commitment in space activities and related research and technology development in the field.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

The exhibit, which will run through the beginning of January 2023, is promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation along with the Italian Space Agency (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana, ASI) and Telespazio / e-Geos, and is aimed at presenting the unexpected, intrinsic, and mysterious beauty of Earth through the “lens of a satellite”, or rather five: the COSMO-SkyMed system of satellites.

Upon registration during any of the available visiting times from December 16, 2022, through January 6, 2023, guests will be able to observe Earth from a new perspective, as different patchworks and mosaics of terrestrial fragments present the life of a city, the activity of a volcano, the history of a lake or a glacier, or the truth of a forest or a desert, and reveal the existence of “hidden” realities open to our discovery.

The exhibit is curated by Filippo Maggia, prominent photographer and curator of photography who has worked at Galleria Civica di Modena, the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo di Torino, and Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Bologna, among others, and is now chief curator of Fondazione Fotografia and of the contemporary photographic collections of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena.

ABOUT COSMO-SkyMed

COSMO-SkyMed is a system of five radar satellites that monitor Earth day and night, regardless of weather conditions for emergency prevention, and scientific and commercial purposes. It is funded by the Italian Space Agency (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana, ASI) and the Italian Ministry of Defense and provides data on a global scale to support policy development in various areas including risk management, environmental protection, natural resources exploration, security, and maritime surveillance.

e-GEOS is the world-wide exclusive distributor of COSMO-SkyMed and operates, on behalf of ASI’s IC-UGS (Italian Civilian User Ground Segment) at the Matera Space Center by Telespazio.

ABOUT ITALY-US SPACE COLLABORATION

Italy is a historic partner of the United States. For over 50 years, Italy has collaborated on deep-space probes, satellites and orbiting platforms, as well as on the International Space Station, setting a unique example of peaceful alliance on a global scale devoted to scientific research using Italian-built technology. In recent years, Italy has intensified its collaboration on human and robotic exploration of deep space with the United States and the partners of the European Space Agency (ESA), keeping in mind the positive effects of the New Space Economy, the commercialization of aerospace-derived products and services, and the active involvement of private actors.
