Joyce Gordon Gallery presents “Looking Back” Series, a 3 x 3 Summer Solos exhibit by Fan Lee Warren.
Warren often ritualistically stresses her paper's surface using fire, earth, and cooking herbs to convey history. Her overlapping, collaged images of children, adults, and symbols are drawn and painted using a mixture of acrylics, watercolors, inks, pastels, and charcoal.
She uses the ancient universal spiral to further convey the history and its impacts on present society because of its timeless movement and flow. She believes the transformative pattern of the ring connects to ancestral memories; each spiral loop brings one back to the same place.
Fan Lee Warren is a contemporary black artist who explores how the past affects the present and future. For over three decades, her work has examined various perceptions of African American culture, its historical construct, and its effect on contemporary society. For instance, in her piece "Shoot to K*ll," the title is taken from a shocking statement that Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley made during a televised press conference regarding the categorized "1966 Chicago West Side Racial Riots."
Hours later, he redacted the comment to "Shoot to Maim." Yet the image is re-appropriated from the 1967 four-day conflict, which the Times magazine titled "Newark: The Predictable Insurrection."
Joyce Gordon Gallery is a commercial fine art gallery located in the downtown district of Oakland, California. It exhibits art that reflects the social and cultural diversity of the Bay Area and international artists.
