Longlands is an area steeped in history. It is one of the most significant neighbourhoods in the story of how Bradford developed, both as an industrial city and as a beacon for social improvements, yet it is seldom talked about today. Hidden in the northwest of the City Centre and often referred to as ‘Chain Street’, this district boasts some fantastic amenities and examples of built heritage including the Castle Hotel, Perkin House, the New Beehive Inn and St Patrick’s Church. It was for decades host to the City’s Irish Club and has been the subject of major regeneration in recent years.
Even more hidden is the tale of how this area came to be built in the first place, how it grew, its decline by the late 19th Century and the battle to bring it social justice and environmental improvement that raged on for decades.
This talk is to mark the launch of our new publication “Longlands: The History of a ‘Lost’ Bradford Neighbourhood” which was written following research into post-war life in the area including speaking to current and former residents. The talk will be delivered by Jonathan Crewdson, Director of the Neighbourhood Project CIC, and will explore the history of one of the least well-known historic neighbourhoods in the heart of the City Centre.
This session is free including refreshments and will take place at the Millside Centre on Grattan Road, on the edge of Longlands. Please arrive before 1.30pm for registration.
