About this Event

As part of the Monkstown Nature Plan 2024 our next event is on Monday Evening 27 May, 6-8 pm.

Longford Gardens - Understanding our Native Grasslands

We know about the importance of trees and native forests, but in Ireland we also have native grasslands which can be equally important for nature and climate.

Linda Gilsenan, an experienced and practical ecologist, will guide us through the range of plants that are to be found in the wild part of Longford Gardens. Using quadrants we'll identify grasses and flowers. We will learn about the value of our native plants and the role of grasslands.

Native grasslands support our pollinators and we will be looking for evidence of wild bees and in particular our mining bees.

It should be another very interesting and enjoyable evening with Linda who is working with Monkstown Tidy Villages for the year. We will learn how we can make some spaces for the pollinators in our own gardens.

Although broadly aimed at adults, the event is open to children but they must be accompanied by an adult.

Please wear suitable clothing and strong footwear as there are some steep slopes.

We will meet at the look out, Seapoint Avenue, opposite the turn off to Albany Avenue.

This event is free. Most of our nature events and activities get booked out. If you’d like to become a paid-up member and get priority access to them, it’s just €20 for family membership and €10 for individuals. You can pay by Stripe at https://monkstownvillage.ie/join-us or email us and we’ll get in touch with you. We’d love to have you as part of our growing team of supporters!

All the activities in our Nature Plan are co-funded by Community Foundation Ireland or by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. We are very grateful for their support.
