About this Event
Long Story Short workshop presenters, Joy and Linda, combine their expertise and passion to bring you the motivational information and practical tools that will help make your writing happen, while sparking the momentum needed to keep it going and having fun!
Each of the four beginners’ workshops is standalone but complements the others. Emerging writers are welcome too.
Workshop 1: How to Write a Novel Part 1 (Getting Started) Is writing a novel on your bucket list? Are you having trouble getting started? This simple yet comprehensive workshop addresses conflict, characters, setting, viewpoint, and more to help you turn your big ideas into your first best book. Joy – Thurs. Jan. 19
Workshop 2: How to Write Life Stories Part 1 (Getting Started)Is it time to get those important stories from your life down on paper? But how do you begin? At the beginning, with the who of author and audience, the why of purpose and intent, the what of content material, and the how of process. Write. Share. Celebrate. Make it happen! Workshop 3: How to Write a Novel Part 2 (Creating Compelling Scenes with Characters Who Come to Life)Is the rough draft of your novel stuck in a drawer somewhere? Or maybe it is still floating around in your wild imagination! Either way, this interactive workshop offers you a wealth of tips to create compelling scenes, realistic characters and a cohesive plot to help you create a story that engages readers. Joy – Thurs. Workshop 4: How to Write Life Stories Part 2 (Understanding and Applying Writing Essentials That Make Your Stories Sing) Are you wondering what you need to know to write your stories well? What are the essentials of effective writing, the crafty tricks and artful tips? Theme illustrated by experience, strong story structure, vivid description and detail, and engaging dialogue become your tools while a peek into the ‘X-Factors’ puts a personal stamp on your best writing. JOY LYNN GODDARD teamed up with her husband Daniel Pike to write contemporary adult fiction. Their novels Moonshadow and The Keepers won Canada Book Awards and have global appeal. Besides novels, they wrote Buyers, Liars, Sellers and Yellers, a collection of humorous short stories about the real estate industry. Although she is well known for her young adult and junior fiction—starting with the award-winning Daredevils and including Hello, my name is Emily, Charlie's Song, Jazz, When Pigs Fly, and Mrs. Maloney's Garden—her adult novels have attracted wide-ranging attention, with each covering romance, mystery, and suspense genres. Recently, Joy published Write Right, Novel Writing for Beginners, her first resource book.
Joy and Dan divide their time between Guelph and Belleville, Ontario, where they spend time with a growing family when not working on their next book.
LINDA BOND writes creative nonfiction packed with images, chuckles, and insights. Her spirited narratives have appeared in Tales2Inspire – the Opal Collection, Florida’s Lifestyles After 50 and Writers On The Air. She recently co-authored Storied – Chronicles by the Circle of Six, a Canada Book Award-winning collection of memoir short stories. Linda is also known for her “writers helping writers” initiatives. She is the creator of the "Writing Your Life Stories – Making It Happen" workshop series, as well as "PAGES" - gatherings for readers and writers to hear and celebrate the written word which she hosts at the Belleville Library. Linda and her husband Martin live and sail on the Bay of Quinte.
