Long Live the Dead! is a musical road movie set in the north of Ghana. Stevo Atambire is a funeral performer who travels on his motorbike through the land of the Fra Fra to pay tribute to the deceased, helping family members say goodbye to their loved ones.

A film BY Sofie Hanegreefs & Kris Pannecoucke about the music and rituals around death of the Frafra people from Ghana’s Upper East Region.
The only thing we are certain of in life is that we will all die one day. Since the beginning of time, people from all over the world have had very different rituals to deal with death. In modern society, death is often perceived as a taboo and not seen as a part of life.
In the culture of the Fra Fra people in northern Ghana, a death is a reason to celebrate life. Troubadour Stevo Atambire is a Kologo musician who plays at these funeral celebrations.

STEVO
Stevo plays a traditional Kologo guitar and sings improvised songs about the life of the deceased. With his music he honors the deceased and helps family members to say goodbye to their loved ones. StevO started as a student of King Ayisoba and has toured a lot already all over Europe, solo and with duo Alostman.

ANNELIES VERHELST
Photographer Annelies Verhelst traveled to the Upper East Region of Ghana early 2019, joining a tour of musicians set up by kologo star King Ayisoba. She was introduced to the local community and was able to witness some of the rituals around burial and death. Her pictures will be part of the exhibition on this special evening.
