About the Film

Mind The Gap from award winning filmmaker and Associate Professor Ricardo Barker, is a sharp, reflective drama that tackles the often overlooked issue of unconscious bias in higher education.

The film builds on Ricardo Barker’s short film Re:Tension (2020), nominated for Best Educational Film at the Learning on Screen Awards; and instrumental in Leeds Trinity University winning the Diversity & Inclusion category at the 2021 Whatuni Student Choice Awards.

The story follows Daniel (Ciaran Dow Jones), a respected senior lecturer whose grading practices are exposed as unequal. What begins as a defence of his integrity becomes a transformative journey for Daniel, his colleagues, and his students as they confront uncomfortable realities lurking beneath the surface of academia.

Co‑created with students & staff across Leeds Trinity University — and informed by collaborations with University College London and St Mary’s University — the project translates extensive research data on the “awarding gap” into a compelling narrative that both provokes and educates.

Mind The Gap is a research driven film that uses comedic storytelling to make complex data visceral and human. By centring student voices, we challenge audiences to recognise their own biases and imagine fairer futures for higher education.
