Call Me Lola is an autobiographical work exploring memory, loss and personal history. The book features archival family portraits and documents, as well as Loli Kantor’s self-portraits, annotations on photographs she made of ephemera, and her new work of present-day places and geographies relating to her family history in Poland, Germany, France and Israel. The photographs blend personal narrative with broader cultural contexts.
Kantor bears the name of her mother, Lola, deceased two hours after she gave birth to her in Paris, France. Her life was defined by a string of tragedies, with her father’s death when she was 14 years old and, later, the loss of her only brother from this nucleus family. She has no grandparents, as her parents’ families perished during the Holocaust. Trauma, the fractures in her life, feelings of bereavement, and loss are the governing elements guiding Kantor’s research, her lost mother, Lola, taking the center stage of the story.
An essay about the role of photography in shaping memory by curator, photography historian and scholar Dr. Nissan N. Perez, and a conversation with Loli’s daughter, curator and art historian Danna Heller.
