Logophile Presents: What Are You Waiting For: An Anthology at Bruce's Garden
Join us for a night of readings from the newly released What Are You Waiting For? An Anthology,.
This multi-genre collection of work that explores the very human, very common and very under-examined act of waiting. The small everyday waits and the bigger, more unforgettable ones, too. As one reviewer notes: "A good anthology should feel like an intimate dinner table with family, friends and strangers alike, telling fascinating and gripping stories. What Are You Waiting For: An Anthology does just that.”
This event is free and open to the public and will feature short readings by several anthology contributors, including Inwood resident Carla Zanoni, as well as editor and writer Kathy Curto. We will include a short Q&A about the work and creativity with our audience.
Artists include:
Shanequa Benitez, a Harlem based artist, originally from Yonkers, New York. Her work draws from her experience growing up in public housing and engaging with issues of systemic inequality. For more than ten years, she has focused on themes such as community, environmental injustice, redlining, and current events. She works across painting, mixed media, photography, and writing to document and share underrepresented stories.
Her projects have included residencies with Yonkers Arts, the Riverfront Art Gallery, and San Diego State University. She recently presented a solo exhibition at Sarah Lawrence College, supported by the Mellon Foundation in partnership with Groundwork USA. Benitez approaches her practice as a way to examine social justice, environmental racism, healthcare access, and food insecurity, using art as a means of reflection and dialogue.
Crystal Castro, who grew up in New Jersey, in a town where people cared whether you were a Northender or a Southsider (she was a Southsider). When she isn't writing, she helps edit books for Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. Kathy Curto, a writing professor and the author of Not for Nothing-Glimpses into a Jersey Girlhood (Bordighera Press, 2018) and the editor of editor of the multi-genre collection, What Are You Waiting For? An Anthology (Motina Books). She lives in the Hudson Valley with her family and can be found in her front yard, on most mornings, replenishing her Little Free Library with donated books. Evan Dekens, whose debut chapbook collection Anatomies of Disappearance won the 2024 Apogee Chapbook prize from April Gloaming Press. He received degrees in English and Transformative Urban Education from Montclair State University and briefly studied fiction writing in the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s MFA program. After leaving the program, he dedicated his work primarily to education and poetry. His criticism, reviews, and poetry appear or are forthcoming in The Humanities Review, FilmMatters, and Public Books. He lives in Montclair NJ and is proud to work in Newark where he teaches High School English and Creative Writing.
And...Carla Zanoni, a writer, poet, and journalist whose Spanish-English chapbook, Knowing/Saber—exploring grief, whimsy, and life in New York City—was published in 2024. She is currently working on a book about what she once thought was the biggest mistake of her life. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Common, Modern Loss, TueNight, and several news publications. She is a media executive, formerly of The Wall Street Journal and TED, and now leads the Engagement Journalism program at the Newmark Graduate School at CUNY. She splits her time between Inwood and the Catskills with her husband and their cat Talula. She writes a monthly newsletter at carla.substack.com.
