About this Event
We meet at the Lockkeeper's House and hear the stories about Tiber Creek, the waterway that once ran east-to-west roughly along today's National Mall and was converted to the Washington City Canal in the early 19th century. Come learn about its impact on D.C. and American history. After reaching the Summer House on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol, we return to the Lockkeeper's House. From here, participants are encouraged to attend our LocktoberfestDC Celebration at Sauf Haus Bier Hall & Garten, which runs 3PM-5PM.
This history-inspired art by Peter Waddell shows Tiber Creek, from its mouth at the Potomac River near the White House eastward towards the U.S. Capitol.
This maps shows the 3-mile Tiber Creek walk starts at the Lockkeeper's House (C) and goes east to the Summer House (E) on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol. Tiber Creek was engineered into the Washington City Canal (shown as the purple line along today's Constitution Avenue NW). After returning to the Lockkeeper's House, we enjoy our LocktoberfestDC Celebration at the Sauf Haus Bier Hall & Garten (F).
