A coalition of northwest Florida businesses, residents, elected officials, and environmental organizations will host a press conference on Saturday January 10 on Pensacola Beach to mark the unified local opposition to expanded offshore drilling near Florida. This comes as the federal government recently proposed an expansion of offshore drilling into a 20 million acre area of the eastern Gulf, which would bring drilling closer than ever to Florida. Event speakers include:
Ashlee Hofberger, Escambia County Commission District 4
Rhonda Dorfman, Pensacola Beach Advocates
Jennifer Brahier, Pensacola City Council District 1
Colten Wright, Santa Rosa County Commission District 5
Jeff Elbert, owner of Island Style, Navarre, FL
Darien Schaefer, President & CEO, Visit Pensacola
Ted Ent, President and CEO, Innisfree Hotels
Jim Heald, Col. USAF (Ret.)
Christian Wagley, Healthy Gulf
In response to the proposed expansion of offshore drilling, local governments and tourism organizations across northwest Florida have issued resolutions and letters in opposition. A comment period on the proposal ends January 23, and local residents, businesses and elected officials are encouraged to submit comments on the plan. Come out and learn more about the threat from offshore drilling and what you can do about it.
