Local Government Night at Book Passage Corte Madera
About this Event
An evening celebrating the people of local government who spend their careers helping others and making their little wisp of the world a better place.
Join Jim Schutz, Mai-Ling Garcia, and Tonia Lediju for poetry, stories, and lively conversation about the commitment, creativity, humor, and humanity behind public service—and the people who keep our communities running.
Mai-Ling Garcia has helped cities around the world turn bold ideas into better public services. Now a Senior Visiting Fellow in Technology & Democracy at New America and Founder and Principal of Ling & Company, she explores how AI and emerging technology can serve the public. Previously, she led international digital innovation and AI programs at Johns Hopkins University and served as San Francisco’s Head of Digital Strategy and Engagement.
Tonia Lediju brings more than 30 years of public sector experience—and the perspectives of both an executive and an elected official. She became Executive Director of the Marin Housing Authority in April 2026 and also serves on the Vallejo City Council. As CEO of the San Francisco Housing Authority, she led a major organizational turnaround, restoring stability and guiding the agency out of federal oversight.
Jim Schutz, poet and former San Rafael City Manager, brings over 30 years of local government experience to his poetry, capturing the quiet triumphs, unspoken challenges, and everyday humanity of public service. He will read selections from The Mayor Has a Hammer and join Mai-Ling and Tonia in a conversation about the people behind the work, followed by audience Q&A.
Whether you work in public service, love poetry, or simply care about your community, you’re welcome. Bring a colleague or friend!
