This course is offered to New Jersey State Licensed Massage and Bodywork Therapists and may be applied toward continuing education requirements for the 2026 licensure renewal period.
Most of us know someone facing a cancer diagnosis or cancer treatment. Massage can offer real comfort and relief during that journey—but only when the therapist has the right training and assessment skills to keep it safe and effective.
In this class, you'll learn the indications, contraindications, and modifications for working with oncology clients. We'll cover what cancer is, how it's treated, and how treatment affects the body, so you know exactly what's safe and what isn't. Massage fits safely into a client's care plan when their Oncology Treating Team has given medical clearance.
The gentle, therapeutic techniques you'll practice form the foundation of a basic oncology massage session. Done well, this work can help clients process medications more effectively, ease the effects of radiation, reduce nausea, prepare the body for surgery and support recovery afterward, improve mind-body awareness, and lift spirits—creating a more positive experience alongside their medical treatment.
We'll also dig into anatomy and physiology, positioning, draping, technique, and the legal and documentation side of working with this population.
This class is hands-on, so come ready to practice. Bring your table, your usual hands-on supplies, 3–4 pillows, and 4 hand towels, and wear comfortable clothing for hands-on exchange with a partner. Active participation is what will help you level up your skills.
This training welcomes practitioners of all levels, especially those drawn to cancer care. The techniques you'll learn are just as valuable for frail or elderly clients and in hospice settings.
You're welcome to take this as a standalone class, though the 2-day option offers a more complete foundation.
