What is it?
The LKBF’s Latinx Storytellers Conference is an annual, in-person gathering of Latinx children and adult book writers and illustrators. During this two-day event, hundreds of Latinx storytellers will enjoy craft masterclasses, professional development sessions and have access to hard-to-reach industry professionals such as publishers, editors and literary agents.
Our programming goals are threefold:
- Community, connection and belonging;
- Craft and professional development; and
- Industry access and networking.
All conference proceeds will benefit the Latinx KidLit Book Festival’s programs including the virtual book festival now celebrating its fifth year, school visits and book donations, educator outreach and advocacy for Latinx-authored children’s books in schools and libraries everywhere.
Just like when we launched the Latinx KidLit Book Festival with the goal of bringing the work of Latinx creators to more readers and educators, we hope that this conference will help more Latinx writers and illustrators become successfully published storytellers!
What will the programming look like?
The conference will take place at Scholastic's headquarters in SoHo, NYC on Friday, September 13 and Saturday, September 14, 2024 just in time for Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month.
On Friday, we will have masterclasses and lunch & learn sessions at various publishers’ headquarters. In the evening, we will hold a conference kick-off event and reception at the New School’s Tishman Auditorium.
Saturday is structured as a traditional writer’s conference with keynotes, breakout sessions and manuscript and portfolio consultations. Event capacity will be limited to 270 Latine writers, illustrators and storytellers.
Benefits of attending the LKBF Latinx Storytellers Conference:
- Masterclasses, intensive workshops and keynotes with award-winning, best-selling Latinx authors, illustrators, veteran editors and literary agents
- Exclusive insider access with Big Five publishers to be held at their NYC headquarter offices
- Pitch opportunities with literary agents and editors from traditional publishers
- Sessions on craft, marketing, publishing industry insights and the business of being an author
- Mentorship and support opportunities with published Latinx authors
- Community networking events
Who is this conference intended for?
The LKBF Storytellers Conference is for all writers, illustrators and storytellers that self-identify as Latine/Latinx. Our programming is built around community, professional opportunities and craft development for both agented and non-agented, published and not yet published writers and illustrators of books for children and adults.
The Latinx community is an incredibly vast and diverse group of people that includes Afro-Latinx, Indigenous Latinx, Asian Latinx, white Latinx, and any and all combinations of race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation. Latinx is not tied to any specific race, but is rather a classification term referring to people with cultural ties to Latin America. We are not one voice, but many.
