After the implosion of Halifax art-rock band Down With the Butterfly in 2008, Kris Pope and Dave Scholten re-emerged with renewed focus as folk-rock band Acres and Acres. Inspired by Neil Young’s Harvest album and the legends around the making of it, the band booked an ancient wooden church crafted by Nova Scotia boat builders to record their debut album. The concept was to record the entire album live to capture a moment in time among friends. The one exception to the live album concept is a single vocal overdub by Amelia Curran. They even had artists in the balcony of the church creating what would become the album artwork. The reception of their debut album All Nations led them to tour the country coast to coast and record their second album Truth & Sky. In 2015, the band went on hiatus to raise babies and talk about heat pumps. They reunited in 2022 for a one off performance at Paddlefest in St. Andrews by the Sea.
This upcoming string of special Maritime shows will feature the full five-piece touring ensemble, including seasoned pros Jordi Comstock (drums), Ian Bent (keys), and Ian M. Sherwood (bass).
All Nations was nominated for Group Recording of the Year at the 2011 ECMAs
“…a record that I can only describe as the Nova Scotia Trinity Sessions.” – Tom Power, CBC Radio
Truth & Sky was nominated for both Folk and Group Recording of the Year at the 2014 ECMAs.
“Truth And Sky has a beautiful arrangement… Scholten and Pope’s vocals are stirring and graceful throughout.” – East Coast Music with Bob Mersereau, CBC
