About this Event

We are delighted to be holding this event for stroke survivors to get together, share stories, hear from our speakers and take part in discussion groups. Our thanks to Irwin Mitchell for sponsoring this event.

  • Hear from our Guest Speaker, fellow stroke survivor Ingrid Ash
  • Meet fellow survivors from our stroke community
  • Take part in facilitated discussion groups
  • Find out more about Different Strokes from our CEO, Austin
  • Meet some of our commercial partners that provide products and services for stroke survivors

Numbers are limited for these events, so if you would like to come it is essential that you purchase a ticket. The cost of a ticket for the event is £10, which includes lunch and refreshments.

We have decided to charge a fee this year because when we have held free events before we have had a large number of people who have booked but then not turned up on the day. As there is the possibility that there may be more people interested in attending than we have spaces available, it is important for us to keep no-shows to a minimum. Therefore, we are asking for people to pay £10 to ensure that they are committed to attending on the day. We are heavily subsidising the cost per person.

If you would really like to attend but would struggle to meet the cost, please contact us at [email protected] and we will see what we can do.

About our speaker:

Our keynote speaker is Ingrid Ash.

Ingrid’s life changed dramatically in September 2007 when, at 31 weeks pregnant with her second daughter, she suffered a multi-focal stroke. Thrust into the dual roles of stroke survivor and new mother, Ingrid faced immense challenges. "In hospital, their focus was on 'how to make a cup of tea,' but mine was on 'How do I feed my baby and hold her?'" she recalls.

Determined to turn adversity into advocacy, Ingrid and her husband Darren found solace in Different Strokes. Not finding a local group, she established one in Birmingham in 2010. It has since grown into a vibrant community offering inclusive exercise sessions, art therapy workshops, and social outings. "I wanted to create a space where survivors like me could feel understood and supported," says Ingrid.

A former paediatric nurse, Ingrid now serves on the Stroke Engagement Group at her local hospital, advocating for better long-term psychological support. She also educates healthcare professionals on stroke patient challenges.

Ingrid is passionate about showing fellow stroke survivors that there is life after stroke. Through her group's activities and her own example, she aims to inspire and support others, proving that recovery can lead to a fulfilling life.

Honoured with the Outstanding Contribution Award 2024 by Different Strokes, Ingrid’s tireless efforts and profound impact inspire others to navigate their journeys with resilience and optimism.

Please note: While there is a nearby car park, it is quite expensive, so we advise that people take public transport if possible. Alternatively we suggest you research a more suitable place to park. If you require an accessible parking space, please let us know now, so we can arrange this for you, as they are limited.
