About this Event
Welcome to Livewire — an event created to highlight, amplify, and uplift Vancouver’s rising and established queer DJs.
Each edition of Livewire brings together three artists from across the community, uniting on one shared vision. An up-and-coming DJ, an established name, and a headliner collaborate on three cohesive sets. Each Livewire focuses on a unique genre -- our first: Techno.

////// TECHNO //////
Techno is a genre of electronic dance music characterized by repetitive, machine-driven rhythms, synthesized sounds, and a focus on texture and atmosphere rather than melody or vocals. It originated in Detroit, Michigan during the 1980s, pioneered by artists like Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson—often called the “Belleville Three.” Drawing influence from funk, electro, and European electronic acts like Kraftwerk, they created a futuristic sound that reflected the city’s industrial landscape and post-automotive decline.
From Detroit, techno spread to **Europe—especially Germany and the UK—**where it evolved in clubs like Berlin’s Tresor and became central to rave culture in the 1990s. Over time, it splintered into numerous subgenres such as minimal techno, acid techno, industrial techno, and melodic techno, each exploring different sonic territories.
Today, techno remains one of the most vital forms of electronic music. It thrives in global underground scenes and major festivals alike, blending analog warmth with digital precision. Modern artists continue to push its boundaries—experimenting with AI, modular synthesis, and immersive audiovisual performances—while preserving its roots in rhythm, repetition, and the spirit of innovation.
