Ernest John Moeran was an English composer strongly influenced by English and Irish folk music and is a particular favourite of the LMO’s Chief Conductor, Robin Wallington. His Sinfonietta is one of his most inventive works and is charged with rhythmic energy, yet the lyrical Celtic strains of Moeran’s musical personality are never far away.Next comes Mozart’s delightful Flute Concerto No.1 and we are delighted to welcome the winner of the inaugural Liverpool International Flute Competition, Kamata Kunihiro, who is travelling from Japan for this performance. The LMO has a long history of performing Haydn’s symphonies, and his Symphony No.101 'The Clock' is one of our favourites. It is typical of Haydn’s late work; playful, effortlessly melodic, yet hinting at the developments Beethoven was going to usher in, and it shows why Haydn was known as the 'Father of the Symphony'.
There will be a free pre-concert talk at 6.45pm that will last approximately 20-25 minutes.
