About this Event
This Screening is in support of The Screen at Contemporary.
The MOMENT is a brain controlled dystopian sci-fi film following three interlinking stories. Directed by artist and researcher Dr Richard Ramchurn, it uses brain data to effect the edit, sound mix and narrative. There are over 18 billion possible narrative combinations of the film. Each screening is unique.
In The MOMENT Live Score the film is edited in real time via a brain computer interface of an audience member. The visual rhythms, sound mix and narrative combinations are inferred from their neural reaction.
When the score of The MOMENT is performed, the musicians have to improvise because they don’t know exactly what form the film is going to take. This means they need a ‘conductor’ to tell them what’s coming next and allows them to riff off one another’s performances. This event launches a double sided album to showcase the virtuosity of the musicians as they respond to a new version of the film and are inspired together ‘in the moment’.
The MOMENT is a completely new type of filmmaking, live edited by a member of the audience and different at every screening. The film’s development and reception is the subject of ongoing research, as we try to understand how audiences make sense of the changeable story and enjoy unique experiences each time. The album presents two versions of the score.
Special preview Before We Disappear
Before We Disappear is a narrative response to climate change and a technological response to digital surveillance, engaging with the very real and pressing effects of climate collapse, our agency and ultimate responsibility.
A short interactive film experience which adapts its narrative based on the viewers’ momentary engagement and emotion.
Q&A
Learn more about adaptive film and join Director Richard Ramchurn and musicians Hallvarður Ásgeirsson & Scrubber Fox in a short Q&A at the end of the event.
Richard Ramchurn is leading a team of researchers from University of Nottingham, with support from LEADD:NG and using facilities at Horizon Digital Economy Research Institute, the Mixed Reality Lab, and The Cobot Maker’s Space.
From our past 7 years of research we have seen there is an appetite for this type of work. AlbinoMosquito’s brain-controlled movies have required specialist EEG devices for audiences to interact. We plan to increase our audience potential with the design of an adaptive movie platform that uses a front-facing camera to estimate engagement and emotion in real time.
At AlbinoMosquito we see the potential for new technologies to further push the boundaries of inclusive digital storytelling in the intersection between video games and movies, the interactive film.
