Join Numa Mackenzie at Printopia and experience the art of Moana-inspired printmaking in action.Watch as Numa brings his creative process to life using hand-carved blocks featuring Pacific patterns and iconography to produce large-scale printed fabrics. These works draw on the deep cultural significance of gift-giving across the Pacific — an important part of ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, 21st birthdays, haircutting rituals and welcoming new arrivals.
In Pacific traditions, adorning people with material is a powerful act of connection and respect. Numa reimagines this practice through his concept of Techno Tapa, blending traditional values with contemporary technologies and materials. Like ancestral tapa cloth, these creations honour material culture while introducing a modern approach where pieces can be personalised for the individuals who will receive these taonga.
Come and witness this living practice in action and see something new being created on the day.
Our Live Printing sessions are free drop-in activities, suitable for all ages and skill levels.
