About this Event
The Night Owl and Dorland Music are delighted to announce a stirring night of music showcasing sought-after trombonist, Christian Overton. Christian provides an exciting musical journey that will fascinate the audience.
Originally hailing from Sudbury, Ontario, Christian Overton has established himself as one of the most sought-after trombonists, composers, and arrangers on the Toronto music scene. With a deep foundation in both performance and composition, Christian’s musical journey is underscored by impressive academic credentials, holding a degree from Humber College and a Master’s Degree from the prestigious University of Toronto.
Throughout his illustrious career, Christian has collaborated with a diverse array of world-class artists, crossing multiple genres, and enriching his musical versatility. His performances span the jazz realm, sharing stages with jazz icons like Danilo Perez and John Patitucci, as well as Canadian jazz legends such as Don Thompson and Guido Basso. Christian’s talent extends beyond jazz, having played with celebrated rock bands like Sloan and Glass Tiger, and even with Hip Hop royalty Lauryn Hill. His musical breadth has also led him to perform alongside international icons like Frankie Valli, and he has been featured in classical performances with virtuosos Jens Lindemann and Alain Trudel.
In addition to his wide-ranging collaborations, Christian has made memorable contributions to children's entertainment, performing with beloved entertainer Fred Penner, and to the theatrical world, performing in renowned pit orchestras, including the classic musical Singin’ In The Rain.
As a leader in the jazz community, Christian heads his own jazz quintet and is at the forefront of The Composers Collective Big Band, a dynamic ensemble that champions innovative jazz compositions. His entrepreneurial spirit shines as the founder of Clovertone Music, a publishing company dedicated to promoting Canadian composers’ works, particularly for the educational market. Through Clovertone Music, Christian supports the next generation of Canadian musicians by providing accessible, high-quality compositions for schools and educators.
Christian’s commitment to artistic excellence has been recognized with a nomination as a finalist for the Ontario Arts Council's prestigious Louis Applebaum Composers Award in 2019, further solidifying his reputation as a leading voice in Canadian composition. He also shares his wealth of knowledge with emerging musicians, serving as an esteemed instructor of arranging at both the University of Toronto and Humber College.
Most recently, Christian’s group, The Composers Collective Big Band, released their latest album, The Toronto Project, a highly anticipated recording that showcases the cutting-edge creativity and technical mastery of Toronto’s vibrant jazz scene.
