About this Event
The Night Owl and Dorland Music are pleased to announce a rousing night of music showcasing multifaceted guitarist, Andrew Scott. Andrew provides an exhilarating musical voyage that will mesmerize the audience.
Andrew Scott is a multifaceted creative force whose contributions as a musician, writer, journalist, and arts educator have significantly shaped the Canadian and international arts landscape for over three decades.
As a jazz guitarist, Andrew has established himself as both a sought-after sideman and a bandleader with a deep affinity for classic jazz repertoire. Over the years, he has performed and recorded with notable musicians such as Bernie Senensky, Dan Block, Harry Allen, Grant Stewart, Ben Paterson, Randy Sandke, and Jon-Erik Kellso, releasing music under respected labels like Cellar Live, Marshmallow, and Sackville Records. His latest project, Horizon Song, features esteemed collaborators Kelsley Grant, Amanda Tosoff, Neil Swainson, and Order of Canada recipient Terry Clarke, and was released in 2024 on Cellar Live Records.
Andrew’s commitment to jazz tradition is evident in his efforts to learn from the genre's pioneers. His collaborations with iconic figures such as the late drummer Archie Alleyne and nonagenarian pianist Gene DiNovi have resulted in meaningful musical partnerships. He served as the music director for Alleyne’s Evolution of Jazz Ensemble and co-composed the work Syncopation: Life in the Key of Black. He also recorded three albums with DiNovi, further cementing his dedication to the jazz tradition.
Beyond live performance, Andrew’s music has reached international audiences through its inclusion in film and television soundtracks, including Pretend We’re Kissing, Once a Thief, and CBC series like The Border and Kim’s Convenience.
As a prolific writer, Andrew has contributed extensively to the discourse around jazz and popular music. His work has appeared in prestigious publications like Downbeat Magazine, Wax Poetics, CODA (where he served as the final Managing Editor), Jazz Research Journal, and Journal of Popular Music Studies. His expertise is also reflected in his authorship of over a hundred sets of jazz liner notes. In 2024, he took on the role of principal researcher, essayist, and Associate Producer for an archival release of a rare 1972 recording by American jazz organist Jack McDuff.
In addition to his music and writing, Andrew is also recognized for his work in the literary and academic world. His humorous writing regularly appears on platforms such as The Haven, The Daily Drunk, MuddyUm, and The Toronto Harold, where his pieces garner anywhere from hundreds to over 11K views. His poetry has been featured in Alien Buddha Press and anthologized in various collections, including Resist the Zeitgeist.
Andrew holds a PhD from York University and has been a prominent lecturer at universities and conferences across North America, including NYU, Kent State, McGill, and Western University. At Humber College, where he has built a long-standing relationship, Andrew is a Professor and the Program Co-ordinator of the Bachelor of Music Program. His leadership has extended to administrative roles as the former Associate Dean and Acting Dean of Humber’s School of Creative and Performing Arts, where he oversaw programs in music, creative writing, theatre, comedy, and arts administration.
Andrew Scott's extensive career continues to impact multiple facets of the creative arts, leaving a legacy in jazz, academia, and the broader cultural space.
