LIVE MUSIC: The Fretters, Barkley Cove, and Brookhouse: Eclectic Folk

Come out on Wednesday, June 24 for a great night of folk music! The Fretters will be laying down some country inspired honky-tonking that are sure to get your feet moving, Barkley Cove will be belting out those four part harmonies and and pulling you in with their thoughtful lyric writing, and Brookhouse is going to blow your socks off with most original and moving combination of funk, rock, Latin, and jazz music that you ever did see.

The Fretters: The Fretters is a four-piece queer folk/country band from DC/MD playing original songs about life, love, and running into your worst ex at the bar. Fans are saying they have "infectious energy" and music that leaves them "genuinely uplifted!"

Barkley Cove: Barkley Cove is the band to watch in the new folk scene. Raised on collaborative songwriting and rich vocal harmony, members Jillian Dolan (guitar), Yusuf Miller (mandolin), Silas Gross (banjo), and Robert Myers (bass) mix genres of folk, rock, country, and bluegrass to create a distinctively original sound that will linger in your ear long after their last chord. After forming the group during their first year at university, the group has continued to hone and develop their sound and performance, resulting in a high energy live show focused on musicianship, variety, and originality that evokes the innovative performances of bands like Punch Brothers and Fleet Foxes. As their reach expands throughout the United States, Barkley Cove's imaginative songwriting and dedication to originality continue to push the boundaries of folk music. Don’t get comfortable. Brookhouse mixes rock, Latin jazz, and Americana in a way that only the son of a Cuban-American and a lifelong Virginian could. This eclectic setup has prompted comparisons to artists from all corners of the world - vocals like Hozier, Jeff Buckley and Juanes, guitar like Khruangbin and Santana, with a side of the improvisational energy of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Dave Matthews. With powerful vibrato and a sweet falsetto, lyrics in English and Spanish, and a dynamic backing band who play different instruments every show, Brookhouse celebrates the mixing of cultures–and emotions–to demonstrate that we all contain multitudes.
