Peter Zummo & the Environmental Combo perform watery colorful music in collaboration with artist Melissa Godoy Nieto's live visual creations
About this Event

Thanks to City Artist Corps Grants, the sextet Environmental Combo comes to the deck of Lilac, moored at Hudson River Park’s Pier 25, in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan for an evening of live music accompanied by live visuals by Melissa Godoy Nieto. The performance begins at 6:30 PM and continues until 9:30. The audience can enjoy the event from the pier or on the ship (the Lilac does not sail). Reservations are recommended to go aboard because capacity is limited. Admission is free. A cash bar will serve beer and wine on deck.

This musical performance accompanies Godoy Nieto’s solo exhibition Waters Change, Colors Fade, currently on view at Lilac. To reflect the theme of the exhibition inspired by coral reefs and the stress, resilience, and struggles these creatures have been going through, the music will dwell on steady-state articulated drones and longer grooves. It will be watery, colorful and monochromatic. The exhibit will be open for viewing during the evening and has been installed to provide viewing from the decks or within spaces open to the outside air for maximum ventilation. Masks are required while moving about the ship and exhibit.

The concert will include compositions by Zummo for a sextet he was working with prior to the lockdown who will join him on deck. They are Ernie Brooks, bass guitar; Bill Ruyle, hammered dulcimer; Danny Tunick, vibraphone; Mustafa Ahmed, percussion; Yvette Massoudi, keyboard and voice; and Peter Zummo, trombone and voice. They will perform new compositions and revisions to existing ones.

Melissa Godoy Nieto will be collaborating with the musicians by creating live analog visuals. Godoy Nieto will work with overhead projectors for her light show, using transparencies, fabric, patterns, found objects, and ink to create images, shadows, and moving collages. She improvises with her collection of materials in response to live sounds
