It’s no accident the debut release from Claremont, California’s Stolen 58s, “Live at the Press,” features no overdubs. Three sets - 6:00, 7:15, & 8:30pm
The trio leans heavily into the North Mississippi hill country blues, distilling the tradition’s raw immediacy into something akin to an update. The 58s’ unvarnished, fiery performances rely on both the push and pull with an audience, and with its reinterpretation of the genre’s founding documents.
With blistering, soulful vocals from acclaimed veteran singer, guitarist and songwriter Jerry O’Sullivan—the man who wrote “Pomona Queen,” inspiring the Last Name Brewing’s flagship lager—wailing harmonica from gifted, longtime L.A. bluesman Jeff Masters, and inspired drums and percussion from Steve Chizar and his self-made bamboo drum kit, the band’s live shows have been winning raves and new fans everywhere they’ve traveled over the two years since their formation.
And don’t let the trio format fool you: these gifted musicians make big, wide noise, and it all starts with O’Sullivan. He favors funky Japanese guitars from the 1960s cranked dirty through a vintage American tube amplifier, and gets both mournful blues and precise, vibrato-soaked rhythm tones, somehow at the same time.
Masters’ tone is also a major Stolen 58s component, with old bullet microphones and tweed Fender amps from the 1950s pushing his percussive rhythm and mournfully expressive lead harp as it both supports and punctuates.
And there is no way to imagine Stolen 58s without the distinctive sound of Chizar’s charming, ramshackle drum kit and his singularly inventive style.
