"And this terrifying enemy surfaced, as such enemies often do, in the most seemingly innocent, and unlikely, of places..."In Mushnik’s flower shop on New York’s Skid Row, downtrodden florist employee Seymour secretly pines for his co-worker, the earnest and vulnerable Audrey. Clumsy and unremarkable, Seymour has resigned himself to a parentless life of poverty, mistreatment and invisibility. It’s a quiet desperation Audrey deeply relates to, though her abusive boyfriend Orin makes her growing connection with Seymour impossible.
All that changes when an exotic florist sells Seymour a mysterious seedling – one that first appeared during a solar eclipse. Affectionately named ‘Audrey II’, the plant is of huge interest to the public, and soon, as the apparent discoverer of a new species, Seymour has all the attention and looming success he could ever want. With the sudden, long-lost glimmers of hope, the pressure is mounting to prove himself, save the woman he loves, and escape Skid Row. If only the plant weren’t such a picky eater...
Doing all he can to keep an ailing ‘Twoey’ alive, Seymour finally stumbles upon the one food the young plant needs: human blood. But as the little one grows, so does its hunger, and soon, Seymour is torn between an ill-gotten chance at belonging, or the dismal desperation of doing what’s right. In the end, the darkness he faces may just grow enough to swallow us all.
The fourth production from Green Door Theatre, Little Shop of Horrors takes a twisted, sci-fi turn from the neon-lit pastiche of The Wedding Singer and idealistic escapism of Sweet Charity, to a tone more fitting the company’s Assassins-based roots: one that’s dangerous, darkly funny, and far more resonant than anyone expected.
