The Albany Stage School presents Little Shop of Horrors. Little Shop of Horrors is a darkly comic musical that blends doo-wop, Motown, and rock-and-roll styles into a quirky tale of love, ambition, and the consequences of greed. Set in a struggling flower shop on Skid Row, the story follows Seymour Krelborn, a meek and awkward clerk who discovers a mysterious and exotic plant. He names it Audrey II, after his kind but insecure co-worker (and secret crush) Audrey.
To Seymour’s surprise, the plant brings fame and fortune to the shop, but it harbors a sinister secret: it feeds on human blood. As Audrey II grows, so does Seymour’s desperation to keep up with its demands. Torn between morality, survival, and his dreams of a better life with Audrey, Seymour finds himself trapped in a darkly hilarious spiral of deals with destiny.
The show combines sharp satire with campy horror, catchy songs like “Skid Row,” “Somewhere That’s Green,” and “Suddenly, Seymour,” and a playful nod to 1950s sci-fi and B-movies. It’s both a parody and a poignant commentary on consumerism, desire, and what people will sacrifice to escape their circumstances.
