In the late 19th century, in an area just north of downtown Dallas, Eastern European Jews began to settle. Many worked as tailors and seamstresses for the Sanger Brothers department store. Others established their own shops and businesses. Their presence was so prominent that the area became known as “Little Jerusalem”.
In the early 20th century, a new community began to emerge in Dallas. The mass social displacement caused by the 1910 Mexican Revolution was the impetus that propelled thousands of Mexicans to American cities, including Dallas. “Little Mexico”, or La Colonia, grew up around the KATY railyards north of downtown alongside the earlier Jewish community.
