Join us for this introduction course and explore the major works of James Joyce through Joyce's concept of the epiphany and in the context of moderism.

By the end of the course, you will have been introduced to Joyce’s major prose works (Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, Finnegans Wake) through the study and discussion of extracts and will be in a position to undertake your own further independent reading of these works.

This course is for complete beginners, and those wanting to refresh their knowledge of James Joyce.

An Introduction to James Joyce – Scheme of Work

Session 1 - Dubliners

• Previous knowledge/reading of Joyce

• Concept of Epiphany

• Stream of consciousness

• Naturalism and symbolism

• Reading and discussion of “Eveline”

Session 2 – A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

• The concept of Bildungsroman

• Developing from Dubliners – epiphany and stream of consciousness

• Reading and discussion of extracts from A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

Session 3 – Ulysses

• Developing from previous works – expanded epiphany, stream of consciousness, naturalism/symbolism

• The framework of Ulysses – relation to Homer’s Odyssey; underlying structure, patterns and symbols

• Reading and discussion of part of the Proteus and Calypso chapters of Ulysses

Session 4 – Ulysses 2

• Recap of previous session

• Reading and discussion of further sections from the novel – Lotus Eaters, Hades, Nausicaa, Penelope

Session 5 – Finnegans Wake

• An introduction to the underlying principles of Finnegans Wake – the night book, dream language and puns, the characters and “story”, Vico’s theories

• Finnegans Wake in context – development from previous works

• Reading and discussion of opening paragraph and ending and of opening of Anna Livia chapter

This course is not running on the 15th and 29th September
