The Oakland Literacy Coalition’s 7th annual Literacy & Justice for All Symposium brings together school and community educators, practitioners, funders, leaders, influencers, and community stakeholders committed to sharing and learning effective strategies, approaches, and tools that address the literacy needs of all learners. This event provides fighters for literacy justice with expanded spaces for professional learning in community and a chance to collaborate with literacy allies and champions across the region.
Our work toward literacy justice is critical. 1-in-3 children who started school during the pandemic need extensive literacy support. At the state level, California has the lowest literacy rate in the country with only 77% of adults considered mid to highly literate. In our hometown of Oakland, only 1-in-3 students are reading on or above their grade-level.

Literacy Learning in Action: Site Visits, Learning Intensives & Community
Info: Join us Friday for an immersive day of learning, connection, and inspiration. Friday programming brings participants into schools and community spaces, offers practical learning grounded in research, and creates space to connect with educators, literacy leaders, young people, and community partners.
Spend the morning visiting a local literacy program, dive into a research-to-practice Learning Intensive in the afternoon, and join us for welcome reception and fireside chat about literacy and life pathways, Friday is designed to help you see what’s possible, learn from others, and bring new insights and practices back to your community.

Info: Saturday is a full day of learning and collaboration designed to deepen your practice, expand your network, and spark new ideas.
Hear from two inspiring keynote speakers, choose from 27 breakout sessions, connect with literacy organizations and partners in the Exhibitor Hall, and build relationships throughout the day. Saturday features:
