About this Event
Listening to young people differently: event for youth professionals
In the complex landscape of work with young people, understanding their perspectives and lived experiences is essential for effective support and intervention. Young people in London and Oldham told us they felt routinely disbelieved by the professionals around them, so we want to find ways to listen differently.
Join us for a CPD afternoon at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama to gain insight into the impact of young people being disbelieved, and deepen your ability to listen, validate and respond to the voices of the young people you work with. This research-led event will include watching Credible Witnesses, by award winning playwright Farah Najib, which will tour London and Oldham secondary schools, and has been developed in response to workshops in schools.
We’ll then cover topics such as:
- The impact of being disbelieved on young people’s mental health and willingness to communicate
- How to ask the right questions to validate young people’s experiences
- How to foster an environment where young people feel safe to share their experiences without fear of judgement
We invite youth workers, teachers, social workers, counsellors, criminal justice professionals and any other practitioners committed to enhancing outcomes for young people to take part.
This event has been developed by the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in partnership with Little Fish Theatre and Oldham Theatre Workshop, two industry leading theatre companies who specialise in work with young people. It has been developed out of research undertaken with social workers, youth workers, criminologists, safeguarding experts and from dialogue with young people from London and Oldham.
The event is part of the Credible Witnesses AHRC funded research project led by Dr Amanada Stuart Fisher.
