“You cannot perceive beauty but with a serene mind.” –Henry David Thoreau
To be able to fully absorb the beauty and healing benefits of nature, we need to be attentive. But the distractions of modern living constantly pull our awareness in multiple directions. In 2010, Matthew A Killingsworth and Daniel T. Gilbert discovered that 47% of the time adults think about something other than what they’re doing. As Joseph Cornell writes, “With one’s mind wandering constantly from the present moment, how can he expect to feel a deep rapport with people or with nature?” What must we do? We must learn how to focus our attention on the here and now. George Washington Carver said, “To do common things in uncommon ways will change the world.” Through our innovative nature activities, we help people to see common nature in uncommon ways. By experiencing the natural world with fresh eyes, her presence can deeply touch our lives, often in miraculous ways. At the end of a Sharing Nature Training in China, a participant commented, “These were the happiest days of my life.” This man had come to learn nature education; he left with so much more. Woven into the fabric of the Sharing Nature approach are such universal principles as stillness, intuition, and oneness. With humble genius, Joseph Cornell has turned these principles into practical, play-centered nature activities that have been used with great success in nearly every country in the world.
Sundara (Greg) Traymar is the International Director of Sharing Nature Worldwide and has been personally trained by world renowned author Joseph Bharat Cornell. Sundara is a gifted and inspiring teacher and wins friends wherever he travels. He has spent the last 12 years traveling the world, helping others deepen their love for nature. As well as teaching in more traditional environmental education roles, such as at Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Sundara has specialized in offering people a more therapeutic and wellness-based approach to nature awareness. The forest therapy exercises he has been teaching for over a decade provide people with a restorative cure for the many ailments that arise from spending little time outdoors. Thousands of people have learned how to internalize their experience of nature and feel a greater sense of peace and well-being. As a teenager, Sundara had an experience in the wilderness which awakened his spiritual life and soon after he found Paramahansa Yogananda’s teachings. Since moving to Ananda Village in 2008, his deep joy has been helping people understand spiritual concepts in clear and compelling ways. Sundara holds a B.A. degree in Environmental Studies from Warren Wilson College, with a minor in Outdoor Leadership.
