About this Event

Ventura Land Trust's Environmental Speaker Series presents: Listening to Learn About & Protect Wildlife in National Marine Sanctuaries by Dr. Lindsey Peavey Reeves

Sound is critically important in marine ecosystems, particularly in helping wildlife navigate, locate resources, and sense the environment. With increasing human use, there are more overlapping sounds in our coastal oceans than ever before, including in national marine sanctuaries like the Channel Islands. Over the past several decades, passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) has become a powerful, non-invasive research method to unveil the complex nature of marine soundscapes and how they impact ocean life. Come learn from NOAA researcher, Dr. Lindsey Peavey Reeves, about deep listening in our oceans and how long-term acoustic monitoring has led to unexpected discoveries in wildlife migration patterns, fish behavior, novel conservation opportunities, and collaborations between science, industry, and management to promote healthy wildlife populations.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Lindsey Peavey Reeves works with a diverse and dynamic team of government, industry, NGO, private sector, and academic partners to continuously monitor broadband underwater sound across a large network of ocean observation stations in and around U.S. national marine sanctuaries. This effort includes integrating standardized soundscape and biological data products (e.g., whale presence and ship noise) into ecosystem-based research and conservation management programs, species recovery plans, and risk assessments.
