EXCLUSIVE WORKSHOP FOR SOUND ARTISTS!

Listening: A Gateway to Grounding and Foundation for Improvisation and Composition

Date: Sunday, March 9th – 11am – 1pm

****RSVP REQUIRED - Limited to Musicians, Instrumentalists, and Sound Artists. Bring Your Own Instrument****

Amidst his ongoing exhibition, "Reflected Experience and Shifting Perspective: Here, There, and Otherwhere" at the Public Art Futures Lab, Atlanta-Based, Iraqi-American multi-instrumentalist, hosts "Listening: A Gateway to Grounding and Foundation for Improvisation and Composition," and invites participants to delve deep into the synergy between nature and sound.

About Majid Araim: Majid Araim is a consistent figure in the Atlanta improvisation and new music communities. His work as a composer and performer is deeply rooted in the exploration of resonance, dynamics, and the natural world. Majid’s compositions often draw from his expansive project "Otherwhere," a fantasy world that reflects complex themes such as identity and quantum mechanics. He has performed extensively both in the United States and Europe, bringing his unique vision to audiences far and wide.

What To Expect: Majid will kick off the workshop with an introduction to his artistic practice, highlighting his use of technology to explore and enhance his relationship with the natural world. Participants will then engage in a deep listening session featuring field recordings captured by Majid using an array of specialized microphones. This immersive experience is designed to evoke profound connections with our environment and stimulate emotional and intellectual responses.

Following the listening session, Majid will lead a series of improvisation exercises. These activities will explore different musical concepts and the significance of perspective in creating sound. The session will culminate in a collective composition, offering a unique opportunity for participants to co-create and express themselves through improvisational music.

Who Should Attend: This workshop is envisioned for musicians, composers, educators, and anyone interested in experimental music and the interplay between sound and the natural environment. Whether you are a seasoned artist or an enthusiastic beginner, this workshop will provide valuable insights into improvisation, composition, and deep listening.

Additional Information:

  • The workshop is capped at a small number of participants to ensure a personalized and engaging experience
  • Participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments. Acoustic instruments are preferred, but quiet amps/speakers may also be used
  • Seating will be arranged in the round, with options for chair seating or floor seating to accommodate all participants comfortably

Join us for this special workshop and experience the power of listening and sound as tools for artistic exploration and personal growth.

About the Public Art Futures Lab: The Futures Lab is a space to exhibit, experiment, educate and experience the role of technology as it relates to public art. The Futures Lab is made possible through the support of our host Underground Atlanta, and our residency partners A&E Atlanta and MARTA Artbound.
