In today’s fragile existence threatened by humanitarian ecological and health crises we often hear the word “solution”: we have to find a solution to everything to all of our problems a solution that will rescue us and adjust once for all the other factors magically and forever…

The balanced relationship between man and nature which in the past was protected by ancient cults that considered every living creature a spiritual entity has been missing since the first time that men began to consider themselves intellectual entities. The development of civilizations is causing humans to increasingly isolate themselves and lose their connection with the tapestry of the cosmic narrative. 

So how do we reconnect with its loosened threads?" 

Lisa Batacchi's three tapestries contemplate this possibility of reconnection with a spiritual and primordial dimension. The intersections of raw silk raffia and ramie threads hand-woven by the artist speak of patience growth learning and meditation between one weaving and another.

The artist who is a self-taught self-thought tapestry weaver started to learn this technique during her residency in Azerbaijan where she was invited by the Goethe Institut Baku to discover local culture. On that occasion the first two tapestries from the series Sand Storms in Medio Mundi Meditating on Earth and The World is so far Reversed were projected to be then exposed in Venice in the exhibition SILK. This exhibition curated by Alfons Hug celebrating the silk road was presented at GAD Giudecca Art District during the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022. The production of a tapestry requires a skilled artisan and Batacchi had help from local women and art conservators to help her in her initial steps. 

The time and patience the work requires have brought the artist to meditate over time change symbolism and creation. The waves of a sand storm that liberate the spirit. It was the desert landscape with its sand storms and the writings of Khalil Gibran that were the inspiration for the tapestries. To evoke desert landscapes Batacchi began to work with natural earth and sand colors trying to create forms that like waves of the sand storm cover and uncover and create space for new views and creativity.

Furthermore in Azerbaijan Batacchi witnessed the rite at Atashgah Fire Temple and got in touch with the pre-islamic tradition of Zoroastrianism a cult based on dualism between good and evil positive and negative masculine and feminine that saw spirit in every living thing. And therefore the artist follows the spirit as file rouge as the connection that will lead her from natural to supernatural.

Her works resemble the medallions in the centre of Persian prayer carpets a decoration made of concentric forms that served as a portal to reach Medio Mundi a world higher than ours but not yet divine as divine is something we as mortals cannot reach. Human beings are allowed into this middle world to be closer to the creator.

Therefore the tapestries created after a long process of travel study and research represent three phases of the development of the spirit.

The first piece created Meditating on Earth is woven in beige colors and introduces the concept of earth. Mother Earth a feminine energy that governs nature. The artist created brocaded triangles the vortices or waves of a sand storm. One facing up to the North and one down South they represent the eternal dance between good and evil positive and negative typical dichotomy for Zoroastrian religion as if the opposite poles were ready to create movement that allows the energy to flow but needed a final push.

The World Is so far Reversed draws our gaze to the centre representing firm masculine energy referring to the state of the world today being on the edge of big changes.

The final work in the series The Spirit Will Return to Us which the artist executed herself in a time span of almost a year has a centre a northern star the first tool of orientation for human beings. From the star in the middle four tentacles extend dividing the surface into four sections: two darker representing terrain and two lighter representing the celestial. The four tentacles are forming an ancient symbol that represents the vital energy of the sun. The tentacles trigger the circular movement of vital energy. 

Meditating on Earth and The World Is so far Reversed were presented as a site specific installation entitled Shamal Sand Stone Stars during the Dubai Design Week – Design With Impactand curated by Federica Forti. The installation was inspired by the ancient ruins of Caucasian architecture through which the warm arid wind Shamal blows. The watercolor drawing the color photograph and a textile sample in the exhibition remind us of this installation and of the ability of our work and creativity to create spaces of protection and meditation.

Creation is a divine power Being able to create beautiful things has brought men to challenge gods.

The tapestries manually executed by Batacchi on a vertical loom show us the creation of color shades shapes that represent the earth the sky ancient symbols such as the sun the stars the vortices of sand storms that are intertwined in the narration made up of thousands of yarns. The artist begins to create on one part of the tapestry and then resumes work on the other side always keeping in mind the overall picture the preparatory drawing whose appearance she wants to reproduce. To create we need space and to have space sometimes we need to destroy overturn discover or reveal like the waves of the winds that blow during sandstorms do. And when the storm calms down when the work is done we can see the harmony that arises from the chaos – we have arrived at the Imaginatio Vera interworld between the sensible and the intelligible a place that existed in ancient Persia and the disappearance of which led to the catastrophe of the spirit. Perhaps being able to enter the Imaginatio Vera again means discovering the possible space from which to begin to change the destiny of the world?

Nella nostra fragile esistenza contemporanea minacciata dalla crisi umanitaria ecologica e sanitaria spesso sentiamo parlare di dover trovare una soluzione meglio se subito e preferibilmente a tutti i problemi che ci salverà e adeguerà ancora una volta i fattori esterni alle nostre esigenze magicamente e per sempre... 

Il rapporto di equilibrio fra uomo e natura che in passato era protetto da antichi culti che consideravano ogni creatura vivente un'entità spirituale viene a mancare fin dalla prima volta che gli uomini hanno iniziato a considerarsi entità intellettuali. Lo sviluppo delle civiltà sta portando l’essere umano sempre più ad isolarsi e a perdere il filo del collegamento con la narrazione cosmica.

Dunque come ricongiungere questo filo? I tre arazzi di Lisa Batacchi contemplano questa possibilità di riconnessione con una dimensione spirituale e primordiale. Le intersezioni di fili di seta grezza rafia e rami intrecciati a mano dall'artista parlano di pazienza crescita apprendimento e meditazione fra un intreccio e l'altro.

L'artista tessitrice autodidatta ha iniziato ad apprendere questa tecnica dopo la sua visita in Azerbaijian dove è stata invitata dal Goethe Institut di Baku per conoscerne la cultura locale. Da qui sono nati i primi due arazzi della serie Sand Storms in Medio Mundi Meditating on Earth e The World is so far Reversed. I lavori sono stati progettati per essere poi esposti a Venezia in occasione della mostra SILK curata da Alfons Hug che celebra la Via della Seta presentata al GAD Giudecca Art District durante la 59a Biennale di Venezia nel 2022. La produzione di un arazzo richiede mani esperte e l'artista ha collaborato con alcune restauratrici tessili nei suoi passi iniziali.  

Il tempo e la pazienza che la creazione dell’arazzo richiede hanno portato l'artista a meditare sul tempo sul cambiamento sul simbolismo e sulla creazione partendo dall’idea di deserto come luogo dell’anima e delle tempeste di sabbia che liberano lo spirito. 

Sono proprio il ​​paesaggio desertico con le sue tempeste di sabbia e gli scritti di Khalil Gibran a costituire l'ispirazione per gli arazzi.

Per evocare i paesaggi desertici Batacchi inizia a lavorare con i colori naturali della terra e della sabbia cercando di creare forme che come le onde della tempesta di sabbia coprano e scoprano allo stesso tempo svelando simboli nascosti corrosi dal tempo.

In Azerbaigian l’artista ha assistito ad un rito presso il Tempio del Fuoco di Atashgah entrando in contatto con la tradizione preislamica dello Zoroastrismo un culto basato sul dualismo tra bene e male positivo e negativo maschile e femminile che vedeva lo spirito in ogni essere vivente.

L’artista segue questo file rouge in cerca di un asse fra il naturale ed il soprannaturale.

Le sue opere hanno la forma dei medaglioni che si trovano nei tappeti da preghiera persiani una decorazione fatta di forme concentriche che fungeva da portale per raggiungere il Medio Mundi un mondo più alto del nostro ma non ancora divino poiché il divino è qualcosa che noi mortali non possiamo raggiungere. Agli esseri umani è permesso entrare in questo mondo di mezzo per essere più vicini al creatore.

Pertanto gli arazzi realizzati dopo un lungo processo di viaggio studio e ricerca rappresentano tre fasi dello sviluppo dello spirito.

Il primo arazzo creato Meditating on Earth si presenta nei colori terrei beige e introduce il concetto di Madre Terra un'energia femminile che governa la natura. L'artista ha creato triangoli di broccato

uno rivolto verso l’alto e uno verso il basso che rappresentano l'eterna danza tra bene e male positivo e negativo dicotomia tipica zoroastriana come se i poli opposti fossero pronti a creare movimento che permetta all'energia di fluire in una dolce tempesta rigeneratrice.

The World is so far Reversed attira il nostro sguardo al centro rappresentando un'energia ferma più maschile che si riferisce allo stato del mondo oggi un mondo sull'orlo di grandi cambiamenti.

L’ultimo arazzo della serie The Spirit Will Return to Us viene eseguita dall’artista quasi del tutto in solitaria in un arco di tempo di un anno. L’opera ha al suo centro una stella polare primo strumento di orientamento per l'essere umano. Dalla stella partono quattro tentacoli che dividono la superficie in quattro parti due terrestri più scure e due celesti più chiare. I quattro tentacoli formano un antico simbolo che rappresenta l’energia solare. La fluidità dei tentacoli innesca un movimento circolare che è il movimento dell'energia vitale. 

Meditating on Earth e The World is so far Reversed sono stati presentati anche all’interno dell’ installazione tessile ambientale dal titolo Shamal Sand Stone Stars creata appositamente per la Dubai Design Week – Design With Impact a cura di Federica Forti nel 2022. L'installazione site specific è stata ispirata dalle antiche rovine dell'architettura caucasica attraverso le quali soffia il vento caldo e arido Shamal. 

Un disegno ad acquerello una fotografia a colori e un elaborato tessile presenti in mostra documentano l’installazione e la capacità dell’artista di creare architetture come spazi di protezione e meditazione dal mondo esterno.

La creazione è uno dei poteri divini. Essere in grado di creare cose belle ha portato gli uomini a sfidare gli dei. Gli arazzi manualmente eseguiti da Batacchi su un telaio verticale ci mostrano la creazione di sfumature di colore forme che rappresentano la terra il cielo simboli antichi come la svastica le stelle i vortici delle tempeste di sabbia intrecciati nella storia fatta di migliaia di fili. L’artista inizia a creare da una parte dell’arazzo e poi riprendere il lavoro dall’altra parte tenendo sempre presente il quadro complessivo il disegno preparatorio di cui vuole riprodurre l'aspetto. Per creare abbiamo bisogno di spazio e per avere spazio a volte abbiamo bisogno di distruggere ribaltare scoprire o svelare come fanno le onde dei venti che soffiano delle tempeste di sabbia. E quando la tempesta si calma quando il lavoro è finito possiamo vedere l'armonia che nasce dal caos – siamo arrivati ​​all'Imaginatio Vera intermondo tra il sensibile e l'intelligibile un luogo che esisteva nell'antica Persia e la cui scomparsa ha portato alla catastrofe dello spirito.

Forse poter entrare nuovamente nell'Imaginatio Vera significa scoprire lo spazio possibile da cui cominciare a modificare il destino del mondo?
