Join us for a taster session exploring linocut relief printing techniques and print a range of your own greeting cards, or designs onto paper.Your tutor will guide you through designing an image for linocut. You will be shown how to carve the lino block, apply the inks, and print it – both with our traditional Albion relief printing press, and burnishing by hand. You will be shown examples of lino prints and advice on the kind of designs that work best.
What experience do I need?
This session is suitable for absolute beginners as well as those who would like a refresher and some tutor guidance. Don’t worry if you’re not confident with drawing and imagery, as simple shapes and patterns can be really effective for relief printing processes.
What will l make?
You will produce a series of lino prints onto cards, or A5 paper, and will have the opportunity to print using different coloured inks.
Who is my tutor?
Laura Alice is a printmaker and illustrator specialising in screen print and lino on paper. Her work is heavily inspired by nature with a particular focus on birds using vibrant colours. Laura values the hand-made in her work, focusing on creating hand-drawn positives for screen print to create rich textures and contrast. Laura has been a long-standing member of Leeds Print Workshop and has 11 years of experience teaching across a variety of art and design disciplines.
Do I need to bring anything?
All materials will be provided for the session. If you have any drawings, images or ideas to work from feel free to bring these along with you.

Accessibility
Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and accessible toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at [email protected] to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one blue badge car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street, subject to availability.
Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
