Back by popular demand, we are extending our Lindy Hop & Charleston workshop on Saturday, March 15, 2025 from 1-4 at Viva Dance Studio. Whether you are a beginner just starting out, or a more advanced dancer looking to refine your skills, improve your dancing, or learn some new tricks, this mixed-level class is for you. If you are planning to head to Lindy in the Buff, this will also get you in the Lindy mood and jump start you for a great time! This class will focus on musicality, technique, and will help you elevate your dancing no matter your background.
Lindy Hop was born at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, NYC in the late 1920s and was popular through the 1940s. Finding its roots in jazz, tap, as well as influences from jump charleston and the breakaway, it is characterized by big movement and a pull away from your partner that makes for a lively dance that is a lot of fun.
The Charleston itself dates back to the 1700s with influence from the Juba dance in South Carolina. In the 1920s it found more popular fame with James P. Johnson's song "The Charleston." With polyrhythmic and twisting body movements, this loud and proud dance is a great time to dance both individually and with a partner.
