Lindley Learn - Researching the Victorian Gardening Press
About this Event
Join RHS Libraries as we delve a little deeper into our collections with our programme of study days.
In this session, hosted by garden historian Dr Francesca Murray, we will trace the evolution of gardening and the horticultural industry through the 19th century.
Delving into our vast collection of periodicals, we will explore the boom in gardening press from across the British Isles and how Victorian journals can be an important resource for garden and social history research.
We will consider Victorian literacy and evolving printing methods, before discovering innovations within horticulture, the development of a professional gardeners, and some key voices within the Press.
The session will be made up of three short lectures by Francesca, each followed by a tour of selected works from the RHS Lindley Library collections.
There will be regular breaks and light refreshments will be served, plus the opportunity to ask questions throughout the session.
