About this Event

France Jodoin's luminous canvases exist in the fleeting space between what we know and what we imagine. Drawing inspiration from European Romantic masters including J.M.W. Turner, Rembrandt, and Gustave Moreau, the Quebec-based artist has developed a distinctive semi-abstract style that contemporizes the landscape tradition while exploring profound themes of time, memory, and transience.

Working intuitively with oil on linen, Jodoin creates bold, atmospheric scenes where the boundaries between land, sea, and sky gently dissolve. Her compositions are not depictions of specific places but rather collages of accumulated experience—fragments of distant travels, cinematic moments, and abstract thoughts coalescing into invented worlds that feel deeply familiar. Architecture emerges from mist to reveal and guard secrets. Figures move gracefully through shifting light, without fear or threat. Each painting holds a subtle spark of magic that invites viewers to become part of the narrative.

"My paintings are a collage of many pieces of information, and they never represent something, someone or somewhere specific," Jodoin explains. "I am inspired by a trip I may have taken years ago, a clip from a film, or abstract thoughts that I am compelled to express on canvas. But each piece shares in common an invitation to the viewer to become part of the narrative."

Jodoin's work has gained international recognition over her twenty-year exhibition career, with shows throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. Her paintings are held in prestigious public collections, including the Sherbrooke Museum of Fine Arts, Loto-Québec, and Cirque du Soleil. She has been honored with artist residencies across Europe and continues to captivate audiences with her transcendent vision.

Born in 1961 near Montreal, Jodoin studied various techniques in art schools throughout Quebec and Ontario before establishing her practice. She is primarily self-taught. She currently lives and works in Cowansville, a small town nestled in the forests of southern Quebec, where the natural landscape continues to inform her intuitive and instinctive approach to painting.
