Lime Mortar Seminar
David Young, OAM, will be facilitating a seminar focused on the benefits of lime mortar, and why lime mortar is essential in heritage conservation work. The session will cover the specification of the correct lime mortar, its manufacture, and the most appropriate application of lime mortar in the conservation of masonry of heritage buildings.
The two-hour seminar will focus on:
· The various binders (limes & cements) and their historical use.
· Understanding the properties of sands that affect mortar performance, the selection of mortar mixes for particular purposes and why mortars should be compatible with the surrounding masonry.
· Awareness of the practical aspects of mortar mixing and the repointing process.
· The importance of protection and curing of lime mortars.
Those registering for Continuing Professional Development purposes, the seminar is worth 2 formal CPD points – in accordance with the requirements of the Architectural Practice Act 2009 (SA).

David Young
David Young OAM is a heritage consultant specialising in building materials conservation. With a background in geology, he has been involved in the diagnosis and repair of historic buildings and sites for over forty years, with a particular focus on those of stone. He also undertakes a range of teaching and training activities and has run short courses on building conservation in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. He chairs the Longford Academy which runs training courses at the World Heritage-inscribed Brickendon and Woolmers Estates in Tasmania. He was convenor of the Australia ICOMOS working group that undertook major revisions to the Burra Charter in 1995–1999. David is the author of the technical guide, Salt Attack and Rising Damp: a guide to salt damp in historic and older buildings, and the recent Mortars: materials, mixes and methods: a guide to repointing mortar joints in older buildings, on which the seminar and workshop will be based.
