"Lilia Prado is a Superstar" – symposium 21.–22. oktober 2022

"Lilia Prado is a Superstar" – symposium October 21 –22 2022

Fifty years have passed since the Norwegian court decriminalized sexual acts between two men. Queer Cultural Year 2022 celebrates what we have achieved since 1972, but can also be the starting point for new conversations. In this context, the Astrup Fearnley Museet invites you to the interdisciplinary symposium "Lilia Prado is a Superstar". In collaboration with Hendrik Folkerts, curator at the Moderna Museet, we have invited a number of thinkers and artists to a two-day program. Together we will raise questions about how we imagine, present, and write queer history.

Actress and dancer Lilia Prado forms the starting point for the symposium. The Mexican-Dutch artist, editor and curator Ulises Carrión, organized a film festival in 1984 at the De Appel arts centre in Amsterdam, in her honor. As a Marilyn Monroe character avant la lettre, Prado became one of the biggest stars of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. By the 1980s, however, very few people in Amsterdam had even heard of her. Carrión went to Mexico in search of his superstar and her films. The result was the Lilia Prado Superstar Film Festival, which took place in various cities in the Netherlands.
