Local poets Connie Wasem Scott and Mark Anderson have both played an integral role in the Spokane poetry scene for many years. Mark Anderson co-founded Broken Mic in 2011, which is now Spokane’s longest running open-mic, and Mark was Spokane Poet Laureate from 2017-2019. His debut collection Scarecrow Oracle was ten years in the making and covers themes of childhood, innocence, and loss. Connie Wasem Scott has been teaching at Spokane Community College since 2001 and has been guiding young poets and writers through the world of writing and publishing with her work as co-advisor for Wire Harp, SFCC’s undergraduate literary magazine. Connie’s first full-length collection The Open Hand of Sky weaves readers through personal and family history with the backdrop of the natural world. Both writers will read and will engage in a conversation about poetry— how one comes to and sustains a poetic life, and how the poetry scene in Spokane has evolved and continues to grow.To attend this event, you must purchase a Book Fair & Events Pass which covers entry into our two-day Book Fair and all 17 events taking place at the Montvale Event Center.
