ROTARY WA & MAYLANDS COMMUNITY WALK FOR MENTAL HEALTHRotary Western Australia will hold its Rotary Action Day on Saturday 13th April 2024 in Maylands, kicking off with a Lift the Lid Walk promoting physical health for Mental Health.
These Walks are championed by Rotary for Australian Rotary Health. They foster family and community health, particularly mental health. Proceeds fund crucial research, currently into pre-teen mental health.
Australian Rotary Health is Australia’s most significant independent funder of mental health research, raising and distributing over $20 million in grant funding for world-class research into mental illness and mental health over the past 20 years.
Jerry Pilcher, ARH Director said: “Anyone who has been impacted by or cares about Mental Health is welcome. Teams are encouraged. People unable to walk, but who want to take part, can sponsor others who can.
“These walks are a great way to spread awareness of the 1 in 5 Australians across our local communities who currently experience some form of mental illness, and the 1 in 2 who may do so in their lifetime.
“We’re calling on everyone to help us Lift the Lid on Mental Illness this autumn by walking with us!”
All proceeds will help fund crucial pre-teen mental health research.
Ineke Oliver, Rotary WA District Governor said: “This is a Walk not a race. It is a family-friendly occasion offering an organised fun event. It’s an opportunity to chat, mingle with friends old and new, enjoying some exercise in fresh air. A quiet suburban/residential walk with others helps promote mental and physical health.”
Starting at The Rise in Maylands, walkers will be able to choose from two options down to the Swan River and return:
• a longer more meandering ramble (around 40-60 minutes, 3.5 km), or
• a shorter direct route (around 30-40 minutes, 1.9km) to the river and back to The Rise.
Rotary WA ARH Chair Warwick Smith said: “We also seek ARH WA Lift the Lid Ambassadors, from all backgrounds and groups across our communities. Support your local community, break down the barriers and stigma associated with mental illness, and help raise funds for mental health research. Today's research is tomorrow's treatment. Let's walk together to Lift The Lid on Mental Health!”
Following the Walk, we encourage a visit to “Delivering Hope”, an interactive expo of Rotary-related programs, and then to explore Maylands town centre for lunch.
