Life Writing Masterclass - Illuminating the Everyday

Using lists, photographs, objects and fragments we'll explore the stories that lie hidden within the everyday. We'll think about how ordinary objects hold narratives and themes that can lift our life writing off the page. The day will move between paired conversations, individual written exercises and group discussions. By the end you'll have tools to help develop your work, inspiration to unlock new stories, and perhaps a fresh perspective on the commonplace 'stuff 'of everyday life.

Lulah is a writer and book coach based in East Sussex. Her first book, Elisabeth’s Lists, was published by Granta in 2018. It was one of The Spectator’s Books of the Year, described as ‘hauntingly beautiful’ by the Guardian and reviewed widely across the press. Her second book, a memoir called Grounding: Finding home in a garden, was published by Granta in 2022. The Observer called it a ‘literary hymn to gardening’. In 2023 she co-authored Nature’s Calendar, a collaborative nature book based on the Japanese microseason calendar, and next year will see the launch of another collaborative book, The Ritual Year. She has taught creative non-fiction workshops and courses for several years, and is a regular interviewer at literary festivals.

The session will be held at the Jubilee Library in Brighton and will run from 11:15-16:45 with half an hour for lunch. The venue is fully accessible, near the train station and bus routes and with plenty of options for lunch (including bringing your own). The workshop is part of a series of one-day masterclasses held in the Easter and summer holidays. They are open to existing students on the Creative Writing Programme and other writers looking to improve specific areas of their writing craft.
