“Life Lessons from Being a Line Cook:
How Attaining Deep Understanding Can Change Lives”
Can you really get meaningful life lessons out of a run-of-the-mill job as a line cook? Ari answers that question with an affirmative, “Yes!!”
A Russian history major from University of Michigan who was supposed to go to some unspecified advanced degree, Ari started working in restaurants while he figured out “what to do with his life.” Little did he know that food and cooking would become his life. Nearly 50 years after he started line cooking, the Zingerman’s Community of Businesses that Ari co-founded with his business partner Paul Saginaw is now made up of a dozen Zingerman’s businesses, over 700 staffers with sales of over $70,000,000 a year.
In this chapbook “Life Lessons I Learned from Being a Line Cook,” Ari shares 18 different life lessons that, in hindsight, he gleaned from that seemingly unimportant line cook job: Lessons that are universally applicable to anyone in any line of work. Together, the lessons are an example of what Ari has come to call Deep Understanding—something that he adamantly believes anyone can learn to do to bring deeper meaning and purpose to their work.
On Monday, October 19 at 6 pm, Ari will be in conversation with Heidi Andermack, co-founding partner of Chowgirls Catering, to share what Deep Understanding is all about and to talk through some of those 18 life-changing Life Lessons
Copies of the “Life Lessons” chapbook and some of Ari’s other publications (including his latest “Why Democracy Matters” and “A Revolution of Dignity in the 21st Century Workplace”) will be on hand to purchase, accompanied by tasty appetizers from the amazing team at Café Alma!
Seats are limited so book soon!
About Ari
Earlier this year, Ari was named by Inc. Magazine as one of “13 Founders Whose Businesses Changed America.”
“Behind every great entrepreneur—and Zingerman’s Ari Weinzweig is a great one—lies a distinct way of running a business. And Zingerman’s way of doing business is one worth learning.”
Daniel Coyle, author of the newly released Flourish, as well as the now classic books The Culture Code and The Talent Code, writes of Ari’s new pamphlet:
“Ari writes about democracy the way it actually exists in the world: as a lived, practiced, daily act. For decades at Zingerman’s, he and his coworkers have been quietly building the conditions democracy depends on—shared ownership, agency, dignity, transparency, and responsibility “Why Democracy Matters” is a roadmap to trust, participation, and the steady work of giving people real influence over the forces that shape their lives.”
