Life cycle environmental performance accounting and strategies for buildings, by internationally-renowned experts. Day 0 of ASA2025.
About this Event

The construction sector is one of the largest contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions, with the built environment alone responsible for almost 40% of global emissions. A robust understanding of life cycle assessment (LCA) is essential for built environment researchers and professionals seeking to reduce the climate impact of buildings and infrastructure.

This hands-on, interactive workshop introduces participants to cutting-edge life cycle assessment tools and methods. Designed for both researchers and practitioners, the workshop provides the skills to assess, visualise, and integrate embodied greenhouse gas emissions considerations into decision-making processes across design, construction and operation.

This workshop takes place as part of the 58th International Conference of the Architectural Science Association (ASA2025), hosted at the Melbourne School of Design.

What You’ll Learn

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of life cycle assessment in the built environment, including key methods, data sources, and parameters.
  • Navigate uncertainty in LCA and learn strategies for more reliable assessments.
  • Gain hands-on experience with the EPiC Database, developed to quantify embodied energy, water and greenhouse gas emissions in buildings and infrastructure.
  • Integrate LCA into design decision-making, ensuring sustainability is embedded from concept to construction.
  • Apply insights to real-world case studies, working collaboratively through interactive exercises.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is ideal for professionals and researchers working in:

  • Architecture and landscape architecture
  • Engineering (structural, civil, environmental)
  • Construction and project management
  • Urban design and planning
  • Sustainability consulting and policy-making

No prior experience with life cycle assessment is required, but familiarity with construction and sustainability issues will be beneficial.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will walk away with:

  • Practical skills to quantify, visualise, and reduce life cycle environmental effects in the built environment.
  • Confidence in using LCA tools and databases to support project delivery.
  • Ability to integrate LCA approaches into research projects, publications, and industry collaborations.
  • Connections with peers and experts shaping the future of sustainable construction.

Why Attend?

Join us for this Beyond EPiC workshop and gain the knowledge and skills to embed life cycle assessment at the heart of sustainable design and construction. Whether you are shaping projects in practice, advancing academic research, or influencing policy, this workshop will equip you with the tools and insights to drive real impact.
