About this Event

Join Linda Hantrais, author and local resident, to learn more about the vicissitudes of Monck Street in the 20th century. Discover how, when the Westminster Gasworks closed in 1937, life above and below Monck Street underwent further transformations.

Find out how the pits of the former gasholders became the reserve cabinet war rooms during the Second World War accommodating 2,000 civil servants in underground tunnels and chambers.

Hear how the Marsham Towers, known as the ‘three ugly sisters’, disfigured the Westminster skyline for 25 years before, in turn, being demolished and replaced by today’s Home Office and residential developments built over the remains of the Rotundas.

In this talk, Linda Hantrais presents the final instalment in the series on the Rises and Falls of Monck Street. The previous two talks are available on The Thorney Island Society website.
