The Tidewater Virginia Historical Society is honored to welcome renowned historian and author Dr. Mark Edward Lender for an early look at his forthcoming book, War Without Mercy: Liberty or Death in the American Revolution. This timely and thought-provoking presentation explores how America’s fight for independence became a harsh, all-or-nothing conflict—one in which “liberty or death” was more than a slogan, but a grim reality. Dr. Lender will illuminate how the Revolution escalated into a war of survival, shaped by fierce loyalties, personal stakes, and a deep fear of defeat. From frontier raids to civil conflict in the backcountry, his insights reveal a side of the war often overshadowed in popular memory. This event supports our TVHS mission to deepen public understanding of the American experience as we approach the 250th anniversary of our nation's founding.
