Liam's Double Trouble: THE SIEGE OF FIREBASE GLORIA (1989) & THE LAST HUNTER (1980)

This August, Double Trouble returns to war. Specifically Namsploitation. One of the most ubiquitous and entertaining subgenres of action cinema in the 80s. With tough muscular men, lots of firepower and enough dead extras and soldiers to shake a stick at. This night, we celebrate two of my personal favorites of the subgenre, and also some of the most brutal.
*The Siege of Firebase Gloria (1989)
Directed by Australian journeyman Brian Trenchard-Smith. We follow Wings Hauser & R. Lee Ermey. Two hardened sergeants who have seen too much and killed too many. They are sent to the titular firebase to raise morale and shaping up the men. But when hundreds of Vietnamese are gearing up for an attack. The firebase becomes the last castle on the hill. Military orders are discarded in exchange for a fight for survival. A film driven and fueled by masculinity. With two larger then life character actors getting rare starring roles, along insane amounts of body destruction that would be worthy of a splatter film. This is for big fans of war movies as well as 80s action.
*The Last Hunter (1980)
Antonio Margheriti’s long awaited Double Trouble debut. The plot is as simple as you can possibly get. David Warbeck is a badass military sergeant who is stuck behind enemy lines. And with the help of a wisecracking fellow soldier Tony King, plus a naïve liberal journalist in the form of Tisa Farrow. With Margheriti it's all about the action, and he delivers one of the most blood soaked, relentless and cruel war movies of the early 80s. Along with coming out five years before Rambo II. The blueprint for the rest of the subgenre. So in true contrarian fashion I'm calling 'Rambo: First Blood Part II' a rip off of 'The Last Hunter.'
